Cocktails are par for the course during the summer months – but it's not even September and already we have a toothache. If you're looking for a low-sugar cocktail alternative, that's every bit as delicious, this refreshing rum and tonic patio sipper from Flor de Caña is your signature drink from here until Labour Day.

While you might be more familiar with the standard G&T combination, Flor de Caña 12 Year is a zero sugar rum with a signature dry finish that will turn your tonic experience on its head this season. While most rums tend to have a higher sugar content and don't balance well with the bittersweetness of tonic water, Flor de Caña's oaky vanilla and caramelized fruits provide a crisp finish that fans of the classic highball cocktail will crave. It's safe to say, we've found a new favourite drink this summer.

Flor de Caña's refreshing rum and tonic patio sipper – just crying out to be enjoyed in the sunshine – is slow-aged for 12 years and bottled in Nicaragua. While the rum itself is sugar free, we've added some natural sweetness with the addition of orange slices, which help to enhance the boldness and fruitiness of the rum. Meanwhile. the lime leaves provide a subtle freshness and beautiful aroma that will make you feel like you're on a tropical vacation (at a time when you really need one). Forget gin and juniper – this summer, it's time to mix things up and free the tonic.

We share the recipe for a Flor Tonic below – but if you're still craving more of Flor de Caña's summery sippers, brand ambassador Chris Mosey shares a sustainable Flor Cosmo recipe using Flor de Caña 12-Year and black cherry juice.
