What’s the deal

Hot on the heels of the city’s latest obsession with Japanese-French fusion dessert shops, Fuwa Fuwa brings Japanese soufflé pancakes to Toronto. Meaning “Fluffy Fluffy” in Japanese, the aptly named pancake purveyor has been quietly opening locations across the GTA. You can now find their bright little shops at Yonge and Eglinton, Spadina and Bloor, Square One and in Vaughan.

All of their pancakes are made from scratch to order. Which means the 20- to 30-minute wait is worth it to sink your teeth into these thick, fluffy saucers of goodness. Delicate and decadent, this airy, eggy dessert (or breakfast, no judgement) is best eaten fresh and warm. As they say, “soufflés don’t wait for people, people wait for soufflés.”

What to order

Depending on which location you’re ordering from, the menu varies slightly. Items on the list include French toast pancakes and Japanese desserts but the over-the-top soufflé pancakes are the real lip-smacking deal and we say go big or go home (or, well, go big and stay home).

Topped with strawberries, blueberries and banana, the signature pancake is a not-too-sweet treat. Go for more gusto with all-out iterations like the raspberry and caramelized banana pancake drizzled with raspberry sauce or the overflowing raspberry chocolate lava pancake.

Don’t make the mistake of dismissing their drinks. Made with real ingredients instead of syrups, their concoctions are balanced and sophisticated, not the super saccharine sippers you might be expecting. Get the iced mango matcha latte or the yuzu oolong tea – they both have real fruit chunks at the bottom to snack on.

How to get it

Opening hours extend a little later or earlier depending on the location and the day, but ordering between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. is always a safe bet. Find Fuwa Fuwa on all of the major delivery platforms including Foodora, Door Dash and Skip the Dishes. Uber Eats has waived their delivery fee on local restaurants, so they’ll deliver Fuwa Fuwa right to your door for free. You can also use Ritual to order in advance, then pick up from the location nearest you.

Brunch and drinks for two: around $40.
