We’re pretty spoiled when it comes to outdoor spaces to enjoy a chilled beer in Toronto. But don’t think for a minute that we’re not constantly on the lookout for a new patio. Foliage-filled, secluded, perched on a rooftop, you name it — if the roof is off, we’re on our way.
One of the most unique patio experiences in the city, however, can’t be found in Toronto’s downtown core. Woodbine Racetrack — Toronto’s premier racetrack for thoroughbred horse racing — is home to one of the best outdoor dining spaces in the city. Woodbine's patio has always been blessed with expansive views of Toronto and the racetrack, but this summer, it's getting a refresh. The Stella Artois Terrace opens to the public on August 5, bringing a culinary focus to its menu and a gourmet flavour to your next big day at the races.
Forget hot dogs — Woodbine's patio will be fixing up sophisticated fare like oysters, and mussels served in a lemongrass and coconut sauce. Your favourite shareable plates and bites will still be there, they've just been given the red carpet treatment: think signature burgers stacked with mozzarella, grilled calamari drizzled in a spicy diablo sauce, smoked and juicy brisket sammies, fish tacos, plus delectable desserts like warm banana chocolate cake.
Plus, it wouldn't be race day without a tipple to toast those gee-gees (racing speak for horses, keep up). From classics like espresso martinis to keep you focused on the action to signature cocktails like their epic caesars, loaded up with shrimp or crab claws (a meal in themselves), there's no shortage of ways to celebrate. Spice things up with the Chili Pepper Paloma — or if you're on a winning streak, order a pitcher of sangria for the table.
The Stella Artois Terrace's panoramic view of the racetrack is where you can catch the chest-pumping, heart-racing excitement of live thoroughbred horse racing. Choose from cozy couches, high tables or the standing area at the bar at the tiered patio. Plus, it has a large awning, so you can shelter during any downpours and find shade from the sun.
Races take place every Thursday-Sunday, from mid-April until early December, but we recommend picking a summer weekend to soak in those views with your crew. Fancy a dance? DJs spin tunes every Saturday afternoon. But, if you want the Ascot treatment, don your best fascinator and head to the Queen's Plate — Canada's most prestigious racing event — on August 21. Whether you're coming to Woodbine for the horses, the views or the food, you're on track to a good time.
