There’s something special about a meal that tells a story. Whether it’s a cherished family recipe or a dish inspired by diaspora, food has a way of connecting us to culture, memory and community. Across Canada, Black-owned restaurants are doing just that — serving up more than just flavour on every plate.

ByBlacks Restaurant Week is a celebration of these stories. Running from May 12 to 18, 2025, the annual event shines a spotlight on Black-owned food businesses nationwide, encouraging diners to explore, support and savour. From soul food to Caribbean classics and everything in between, it’s a chance to discover new favourites and revisit beloved staples. Participating eateries will offer exclusive prix fixe menus and $10 specials (discounted by up to 25 per cent) to give food lovers a chance to support Black culinary excellence.

To help narrow it down, we asked ByBlacks publisher and co-founder, and foodism ICON, Roger Dundas to share five of his go-to dine-in picks across the Greater Toronto Area. His list is a love letter to the city’s vibrant food scene — and a great place to start your culinary adventure.
