What’s the vibe
This new King West spot from Nader and Patrick Marzouk, owners of Yorkville’s Figures, aims to offer something for everyone. Comfy booths and big-screen TVs tuned to sports channels gives it a local watering hole vibe, while neon signage, exposed brick and plant-life bring a hipster element.
The 4,000 square-foot space also draws inspiration from 1920s gambling halls with retro chandeliers, gold-topped bar stools and an art deco metal cage framing the bar. An eye-catching art wall with pieces ranging from sports photos to pop art helps to tie these eclectic concepts together. An equally diverse menu and solid cocktail list make the restaurant well-suited to no-fuss lunches, post-work drinks, full dinners or even late-night partying, with live DJs performing on weekends.
What to drink
In contrast to Figures, which is known for its elaborate cocktails, Regulars’ pared-down drink menu focuses on simple, well-balanced flavours. The Flamingo, made with jalapeno-infused tequila, creme de violette, passion fruit, ancho reyes and egg white, packed a serious kick. We also loved the refreshing Rosenthal, made with gin, elderflower, coriander, tonic and lemon bitters.
Approachable wine and beer selections cater to the after-work and dinner crowds, while those looking to seriously get their drink on have one and five ounce shooter options, as well as pitchers of beer sangria to choose from.
What to eat
Chef Ron Stratton has created a broad menu that ranges from shareable apps and snacks perfect for cocktail hour to comfort food classics and light meals. We started with an amped-up poutine made with crispy waffle fries and roasted garlic gravy, which is sure to be a hit with late-night diners. After that, we sampled the sourdough with bacon bark and smoked tomato jam, which is served with skinny McDonald’s-esque fries.
Regulars keeps vegan diners in mind with a flavourful curry made with a Thai bird chili broth and loaded with grilled veggies, chickpeas and quinoa. Asian influences are also at play in the teriyaki salmon soba, a light but satisfying plate that comes doused in a white miso vinaigrette. To finish, Regulars has its own soft serve ice cream machine – ice cream bowls are served alongside sprinkles, sweet sauces and candies for a build-your-own dessert experience that’ll leave you feeling nostalgic for the Pizza Hut sundae bar.
