Good Friday fish and chips is one of the great traditions that pervades year after year, even in secular circles – and even amidst the current coronavirus climate.

But who says the British dish has to be reserved for one time a year? Hot-from-the-fryer fish and chips with a side of 'slaw is a delight on any day.

Here, we've rounded up the best battered fish in the city from local shops that are staying open for takeout and delivery.

Sea Witch

636 St Clair Ave. W.

View on Instagram

At the tippity top of our list, Sea Witch is what fish and chips is all about. Outfitted with retro decor complete with a painting of an old captain, the St. Clair West shop serves thick, crispy, batter-coated halibut (yes, we spring for the halibut every single time) with skin-on thick-cut fries piled high on the side. Even the coleslaw strikes the perfect balance between creamy and vinegar.

Pandemic operating hours are Thursday to Sunday evenings. Takeout orders are cashless – call ahead with a credit card in hand and be prepared to wait outside for your order. They're also on Uber Eats, Foodora, DoorDash and Skip the Dishes.

Find fish and chips a little tired? Switch it up with Hooky's beer battered fish tacos, jalapeño popcorn shrimp or crab cakes and chips. But we wouldn't blame you if you stuck with the tried and true halibut, haddock or cod fish and chips. While they are open for takeout and doing curb-side pickup, Hooky's is encouraging patrons to use Uber Eats, Foodora and DoorDash to maintain safe distancing and limit the number of people in the pint-size shop.
