Skip the imports and say cheers to Canada Day with Canadian Whisky

Celebrate summer by serving Canada's iconic, award-winning whiskies in one of these cocktail recipes at your next gathering or gift a bottle to the host.

The more we travel, the more we realize that some of our favourite food and drink is uniquely Canadian. Poutine, peameal bacon, caesars and, of course, Canadian whisky are all patriotic perfection.

This year to celebrate Canada Day, we're forgoing the imports in favour of homegrown drams that are brimming with Canadian pride and history. From the smooth and easy drinking Canadian Club to the wonderfully unique Reifel Rye, Canada's iconic, award-winning whiskies are equally enjoyed in a cocktail at home, served neat or on the rocks. Showing up to any summer soirée or backyard barbecue with a bottle of Canadian whisky in hand is a quick way to become the host's (and the party's) favourite guest.

Canadian whisky | Reifel Rye

At the 2023 Canadian Whisky Awards, Reifel Rye won Best New Whisky of the Year, and at the 2024 SIP Awards it took home a Gold and a Consumer's Choice Award. Crafted from Prairie rye for its characteristic complexity and spice, Reifel Rye is a feast of a whisky. Notes of toffee, banana bread, chocolate, poached pear and crème brûlée indulge the palate in this 100 per cent pot distilled spirit that's aged in charred white oak and ex-bourbon barrels. While rye is a challenging grain to distill, Alberta Distillers’ rye expertise and hard work pays off in this extraordinary spirit that honours George H. Reifel who laid the foundations of Alberta Distillers 78 years ago.

Canadian whisky | Alberta Premium

Established in 1946, Alberta Distillers Limited was guided by Reifel's standards, commitment to the craft and love of local spirits, and built on the belief that great whisky should be available at a great price. All of these values still hold true. Alberta Premium's grain and glacier water is sourced from the foothills of the Rockies for an elevated flavour and quality. Aging for five years in new white oak barrels, ex-Bourbon barrels and ex-Canadian whisky barrels imparts a full-bodied, rich and complex flavour with rye’s characteristic spice and a smooth, sweet, caramel-vanilla finish. With its explosive taste and earthy flavour, Alberta Premium is the number one selling 100 per cent rye whisky in the world.* It's 100 per cent rye whisky, for those who give 100 per cent. Most recently, Alberta Premium took home two Gold wins and a Consumer's Choice Award from the International Spirits Challenge and the SIP Awards. It's a perfect choice for Canada Day celebrating.

Canadian whisky | Canadian Club

A legendary spirit with a rich, 165-year-old heritage, Canadian Club 1858 is where many of us began our whisky journey. The beloved flagship whisky is still made in the same way on the same property as it was in 1858, when it was founded in Windsor, Ontario for the exceptional quality of the local grain. During U.S. Prohibition, Canadian Club quickly became the number one most smuggled whisky. Its prominence during this time paved the way for Canadian Club to be enjoyed by some of the most iconic film and television characters and led it to become a true Canadian legend. Aging for longer than the required three years in oak barrels produces the smoothest flavour with subtle sweetness and a refreshing zest. This versatile whisky is perfect for a laid back CC and ginger ale or a more elevated cocktail. Most recently, Canadian Club 1858 took home a Gold and a Consumer's Choice Award from the 2024 SIP Awards. Celebrate Canada Day proudly with local Canadian wins.
