Generally speaking, I’m not usually a fan of things that taste “healthy”. Just say words like “whole grain” or “low fat” and I start to feel ill. So naturally, I was a little skeptical to try raiz, a new line of adaptogenic superdrinks.

I went for the chicory and chaga iteration (the familiar coffee-like colour seemed the least intimidating). This particular mixture sees a blend of coconut milk, chaga mushrooms, chicory root, vanilla, cinnamon and honey. The resulting flavour is reminiscent of an iced-latte but with an earthier taste.

This little drink also packs a punch when it comes to boosting energy – but it’s caffeine free. Raiz relies on adaptogens, non-toxic plants that help the body reduce stress and provide an immune boost. So you get a small burst of energy without the caffeine or sugar crash later.

In addition to chicory and chaga, raiz comes in matcha and moringa, a vitamin- and mineral-rich mixture for clear-headed energy; and turmeric and ginko, an anti-inflammatory that boosts mental alertness. All three flavours are made with coconut milk so they’re vegan-friendly. Find them at McEwan grocery and other health food stores.
