Ordering takeout ain't the same as going to a restaurant, but sometimes (like in QUARANTINE) it's the only thing you can do. Until now, the worst part of ordering in was that we weren't able to pair our meals with the expert wine, cocktail and beer recommendations of our servers. But that's all about to change during the COVID-19 crisis.

Perhaps they sensed our desperation and understood that today might finally be the day we break if our "coworker" keeps blinking SO loudly (projecting? moi?); but whatever the reason, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) made the announcement today that any licensed bar or restaurant can now start selling alcohol with takeout food and delivery orders. Since licensed retailers do not need to apply for any kind of permit, the decision is effective immediately and will be in operation between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 p.m.

Liquor may also be sold through a third-party delivery app, the only stipulation being that the licence holder be responsible for making sure that the recipient of the order be at least 19-years-old and not intoxicated. And since lineups outside LCBO stores occurred even after the government announced that the Liquor Control Board of Ontario is deemed an essential service, this is a smart move in the bid to enforce social distancing.

So perhaps that means a local lager with your pizza, or some Chianti with your Italian order? Or go all out and look into some of the incredible offers that will likely be popping up around Toronto's takeout restaurants. Cocktails are a little bit more tricky, since the AGCO will only allow sealed, unopened bottles to be sold. As such, some venues are getting creative, with cocktails being delivered deconstructed à la Dolly Trolley Drinks from the mixologist magicians behind Supernova Ballroom. And Ontario restaurants are now able to offer Ontario VQA wine with delivery and takeout services, meaning you can support local food and drink in a big way – without leaving your sofa.

The final frontier? Asking your partner for a tip at the end of the meal.
