It's been a tough few years for Toronto's vegan restaurants, and things don't seem to be getting any easier in 2025. La Bartola, the only fully plant-based restaurant on the city's Michelin Guide, has announced it will be closing for good in March.

La Bartola chef Iván Castro made his mark on Toronto's food scene with his forward-thinking, authentic Mexican cuisine that impressed critics and patrons alike, including us. His restaurant held a Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction (excellent dining at a reasonable price) for three years in a row. The Mexico City chef cited his physical and mental health as reasons for the closure.

Castro also received the foodism Culinary ICON Award in 2024, which recognized him for his dedication, ingenuity and passion for showcasing the richness of Mexican gastronomy.

La Bartola will close for good on March 15, 2024. Until then, chef Castro has created a special tasting menu titled One Night in Oaxaca, an ode to the state. Like much of Castro's cooking to date, the flavours and ingredients will reflect the state of Oaxaca.

"It’s bittersweet to be closing La Bartola, after so much love and energy poured into building it up over the years,” says Iván. “We are finishing with the same love and joy we opened with, holding on to the purpose and the goal we still carry in our hearts."
