Whether you’re vegan, lactose intolerant or just trying to eat better, cutting out milk from your diet is a good way to encourage healthy eating. Cow’s milk, while rich in protein and calcium, can also be sneakily high in sugar. You’re probably already familiar with some dairy alternatives like almond milk, cashew or soy milk. But these beverages can be a little chalky and unpleasant to taste – plus they’re not suitable for those with nut allergies.
But there’s a new alternative milk on the market that manages to satisfy the most restrictive of diets. Ripple is made from yellow peas which have just as much protein as cow’s milk and no sugar (12 grams in cow’s milk vs. 0 grams of sugar in unsweetened Ripple). There are plenty more convincing reasons why peas are powerful. They’re full of branched chain amino acids that help your body build muscle and they also activate the release of hormones in your body that help keep you fuller between meals.
Almond milk has developed a bad reputation for the high water consumption required for growth. Compared to almonds, peas require just a fraction of the amount of water to grow and a quarter less than dairy milk production. But regardless of how good something is for your body and the environment, whether or not it actually tastes good is another story. The Foodism team put Ripple to the test and we were surprisingly pleased – it’s much richer and smoother than the almond and soy milks we were used to drinking. Plus the vanilla and chocolate flavours make for a nice sweet treat.
