The Danish wordhygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is difficult to translate into English. It’s a feeling that’s often associated with the holiday season and getting cozy indoors with family and friends. You might feel hygge when you pull on a pair of pyjamas still warm from the dryer on a cold, snowy night or while sitting around a fireplace and catching up with friends.
The craft brewers at Sawdust City have come up with their own rendition of this warm and fuzzy Danish feeling with their latest limited edition release – the Hygge ale. This Belgian Tripel (a style of beer made with three times the usual amount of malt of a standard recipe) gets a sour, fruity kick from being conditioned with a whopping 600 pounds of holiday-appropriate black plums. Head Brewer Caleb Gilgan chose a traditional Belgian Monastery yeast strain that gives Hygge a spicy touch.
You can pick up bottles of Hygge at Sawdust City’s retail shop in Gravenhurst or try it in the city at Bar Hop and Beer Bistro.
