The SoHo Hotel, Toronto: What’s the draw

In addition to housing some swish Toronto condos (which have been rented out by celebs during TIFF), 318 Wellington St. W. is home to some of the city’s most spacious suites. The SoHo Hotel’s rooms are double the size of most luxury digs in the downtown core, and thanks to multi-million-dollar renovation upgrades, they still feel every bit as modern.

When we weren’t sprawling out across our king-sized bed, we had plenty of room to watch movies from the comfort of our generously sized sofa — which comfortably fit me, my husband and our perpetually moving puppy better than the loveseat in our condo. Some hotels might be dog-friendly in name only, but The SoHo welcomed our little furball and supplied a doggy bowl so he felt like the guest of honour.

For Moretti’s only outpost outside of Montreal, you’d expect the red carpet treatment — and this bustling, Italian spot doesn’t disappoint. The Toronto outpost is spread across the ground floor of the hotel, with a daytime café serving pastries, sandwiches and coffee, while the dining room provides a refined spot for all the pasta, wood-fired pizza and hearty mains you can muster.

The menu is huge, so let us gently direct you towards the hits: tuna rice cakes with yummy avocado and sesame; the burrata-topped pizza complete with black truffle; and the spaghetti frutti di mare piled high with black tiger shrimps, mussels and clams. Things get lively after 8 p.m., so take your leftovers (trust us, portions are generous) to go if you don’t feel like partying.

Amenities here are on the conservative side, but there’s enough to keep business travellers and staycationers entertained for the night. The SoHo’s health and fitness centre includes a lap pool, whirlpool and steam rooms, plus their gym boasts a team of talented personal trainers who can help you work up a sweat during your short stay. Back in our Premier Luxury Suite, a deep soaker tub awaited us in our spacious marble bathroom — and with heated floors and Molton Brown bath goodies to boot, we seriously considered moving in permanently. If you are able to peel yourself away though, the SoHo’s attentive front-desk staff (ask for Franco!) will be only too happy to assist you and guarantee you have an A+ stay.
